Software development: creating an efficient environment

Whether or not most people really understand “the cloud,” or “the Internet of things,” they do know that all of it must be designed and built. And if it was a matter of telling a computer what to do, there would be no challenges. It’s not that simple. Computers speak a language that humans do not. The new EU funded DECODER project hopes to improve how engineers communicate with the computer as well as each other to score big gains in efficiency, speed and development protocols.

Currently, software production is insufficiently supported by effective tools and oftentimes, engineers lack a systematic approach for the development and reuse of components and their associated knowledge (and artefacts) whenever possible. In addition, a development process or workflow needs to be as succinct as possible, especially when different languages are used at different stages.

To tackle these challenges, the DECODER project will introduce new languages to represent knowledge in a more abstract manner. Additionally, scientists working on the Decoder project will create a prototype of a new software development environment. Use cases will be employed to demonstrate the expected efficiencies.

With a new approach to documentation and language in the software development arena, the DECODER consortium plans to demonstrate a twenty percent decrease in software development costs.
